Nail Anatomy: by NAILPRO

Looking closely at your nail, at the base where the nail meets the skin, you should see a white crescent called the lunula. The cuticle is the piece of skin that overlaps the hard nail and touches the lunula. Believe it or not, cuticles have a crucial role in maintaining nail health. You might want to trim them back or pick at them, but maintaining strong cuticles will ensure your fingernails keep the bacteria out and stay moisturized.

The cuticle protects the new, soft keratin as it emerges onto the nail. As the protein ages, it hardens. Look farther down your nail, toward the tip. There, you'll find the oldest part of your nail. If it's healthy, you'll find that it's very stiff.

Taking care of your cuticles is important because it can lead to stronger, healthier nails. Also, if you neglect them, your cuticles can cause some problems, including painful infections [source: New York Times]. It is easy to prevent these infections, but you need to invest time in some basic nail care.

A good habit to get into when you’re taking care of your nails at home is no cutting or pushing back your cuticles. It’s important to keep them moisturized and then leave them alone. A great way to moisturize your cuticles is with cuticle oil. The oil penetrates deeper than a cream would. Nutrients get dispersed and the moisture is sealed in. Benefits of cuticle oil include: promoting nail growth, building strong and flexible nails, and helping with the longevity of your manicure.

Sanbe Beauty’s cuticle oil includes : Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Tocopherol, *Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) oil. Jojoba is one of the top oils to use on your cuticles to nourish and protect. A seed-based oil with small molecules (similar to human sebum, our skin's naturally occurring oil), it easily absorbs into the skin for intensive hydration and natural moisture. Tea tree oil is a powerful antiseptic that can remedy discolored nails and prevent fungus, in addition to repairing and strengthening damaged nails. Sesame seed oil is ultra moisturizing and deeply hydrating for the cuticles in order to keep the nails healthy. This mineral rich oil coats the skin with high levels of minerals and fatty acids, that act as a barrier, to protect it from damage.
