Even if you’ve spent your life diligently treating your skin as carefully as you can, we’re all going to show signs of aging sooner or later – and that includes under-eye bags and dark circles. There are a handful of reasons why those pesky dark circles appear.

Genetics is the biggest determinant of what kind of skin we will have and what we’ll look like as we age. It’s also possible for under eye circles to be a result of allergies. Year-round allergies like those to dust or mold, or seasonal allergies many of us experience in the spring trigger the release of histamines, which cause an inflammatory response. That means our blood vessels become inflamed and swell – including those under our eyes.

Your best weapon to fight against dark circles and wrinkles is applying a daily protector and wearing sunglasses. The harsh fact is skin naturally loses collagen and grows thinner, so regardless of what kind of skin you have or what good habits you maintain, veins will inevitably start to show through the thin skin around your eyes. What can you do to help with dark circles? An easy DIY turmeric and clay face mask!! You probably already have most of the ingredients in your kitchen! So check off the self-care for today and mix up this face mask fast.

Why turmeric? Turmeric is one powerful spice! It’s one of the most prized condiments in your spice cabinet, often used in Indian curries to add a bright yellowish-orange hue but did you know it also works as an effective and natural beauty ingredient? You may have heard about the benefits to your health from consuming turmeric on a regular basis, you might be surprised to know it imparts the same results for your skin and beauty. This humble spice can be used to tackle skin trouble, treat uneven skin tone, heal cracked feet, prevent hair fall, and even help you get rid of dandruff. One ingredient with oh so many benefits!

Turmeric contains curcuminoid pigments that help the body in synthesizing antioxidants. These antioxidants protect the skin cells from free radical damage and can even slow down the signs of aging like dark spots, fine lines, and wrinkles. It also repairs and restores skin to its natural beauty. Turmeric can also effectively remove dark circles due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

The recipe below is a great face mask featuring the power-packed turmeric. It’s safe to use a few times a week and can be used as a spot treatment or apply to your entire face. Leave on for about 10 minutes before using a soft, warm, and damp cloth to gently remove the paste.

Other ingredients in the mask….

  • Rosewater contains antioxidant properties that help in strengthening the skin cells and rejuvenating the skin, thus helping you in getting rid of the ugly dark circles.

  • Kaolin clay which is mild and gentle, is the least “aggressive” choice of clay, for sensitive, dry or mature skin as it does not overly “pull” the natural oils from the skin.

  • Lemon juice is rich in vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, potassium, citric acid. It is an amazing anti-aging ingredient since it contains lots of antioxidants that protect your skin against free radicals and prevent wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin. Lemon juice acts as an astringent, tightens enlarged pores, and smoothes out your skin.

  • Tea Tree Essential Oil (optional) is a popular choice for skincare, it’s great for treating acne because of its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It's thought to calm redness, swelling, and inflammation. It may even help to prevent and reduce acne scars, leaving you with smooth, clear skin.

Turmeric & Clay Mask Recipe Ingredients:

  • 1 TSP Turmeric

  • 1 TSP Lemon juice

  • 1 TSP Rosewater

  • Tea tree Essential oils (optional)

  • non-metal bowl and stirring utensil

  • Coconut oil + makeup remover pads/face cloth (for cleansing after the face mask)

To remove the yellow staining from the turmeric

The curcuminoid pigments in turmeric will stain your face and hands, but experts have found that turmeric is 2000 times more soluble in vegetable oil than it is in water. Therefore, you will need to cleanse your face with either coconut oil or an oil based cleanser.

To do so, saturate a cotton pad or our bamboo fiber pads with coconut oil and gently cleanse your face until the yellow discoloration is removed.
